Basic Garb Making

A Beginner's guide to fighting wear for Dagorhir events

The Beginner wishing to evolve into an experienced fighter & Dagorhir member needs to aquire basic clothing. On this page are instructions for a novice to create a pair of fighting pants & a "chiton" tunic, that covers many historical (Roman, Greek, Viking, etc) & fantasy periods.

 A Sleeveless Fighting Tunic (Chiton)

For the Chiton I recommend using a durable yet softer fabric such as a wool blend or light poplin. Avoid really stiff fabrics such as heavy denim (like blue jeans) or flimsy fabrics such as muslin. You want the fabric to flow easily yet stand up to fighting. Remember to wash your fabric before measuring & cutting it so that it shrinks if any is needed.

The sleeveless tunic is comprised of two panels joined at the shoulders & at the torso sides. To determine how big those panels need to be measure from the top of your shoulder down to the top of the knee & add 3 inches. This is your length. Determine your width by measuring the circumference of your chest & your waist. Take the larger of the two measurements, divide that in half & add 8 to 10 inches depending on how full you want it. This is the width of the tunic. Both of these measurements allow for 5/8 inch seam allowances & for a 2 inch hem at the bottom to add weight to the bottom edge of the tunic.

Two more measurements are needed. Measure the circumference of your head, add 2 inches, then divide the sum by 4. This is your neck measurement. The other measurement is by measuring the circumference of your bicep & the circumferance of the shoulder (measured under the armpit & over the top point of the shoulder. Choose the greater of these two, divide it in half & add 4 inches. This is your shoulder measurment.

 1) Cut out two rectangles of fabric each length by width as measured above.

2) fold the bottom hem by folding width-wise toward the inside of the fabric 1 inch. Fold it again width-wise 1 inch toward the inside of the fabric. Pin in place & then sew it down. (see drawing to left)

3) Place the "good" sides (the outsides) of the two rectangles together. At the top neck edge (the neckline), determine the exact center of the width & mark with a pin. Then measure out from the center the neck measurement, each way. Place a pin at those two points & pin from each of those points out to the edge of the fabric. Sew a 5/8 inch seam along the two pinned ares of the neckline as shown in the picture too the left. (indicated by the blue lines along the neckline)

4) from the center of the neckline on the front of the tunic cut straight down 4 inches. This completes the neck hole. If you like you can reinforce neckhole by sewing trim along the edges on the outside of the fabric. This will help the tunic last longer.

5) measure down from the top corners the shoulder measurement on each side. Place a pin there. Continue to pin down the sides until you are 6 inches from the bottom. Sew a 5/8 inch seam along the torso of the tunic as indicated by the blue lines on the picture at the left.

6) on the leg area of the tunic, fold the loose 5/8 inch edges in & pin so they match & continue the torso seams. Remember not to close up the side splits along the legs. Sew each of these 4 hems down seperately so you are left with nice clean edges on the split along the legs.

7) Turn your tunic right-side out & try it on. You're finished!!!!!
